About Ben Blotner

I am a writer and musician from Columbus, Ohio, who has been stuck in his emo phase since college. I was a little late to the party, but have developed a strong passion for pop-punk music --- especially from the 2000s --- which is a huge part of my debut novel, Out of the Bassline. The book is a coming-of-age dramedy about college students, emo music, and baseball, centering on a group of students at a mysteriously emo-obsessed college who uncover the dark secrets behind both the school and the lead singer of their favorite band. They learn a lot about themselves while fighting the corrupt establishment and standing up for what they believe in --- and they may have a chance to become rock stars themselves along the way. The story includes a fictional world of pop-punk/emo bands that are homages to/affectionate parodies of the real bands I love, the main three being named Rise In Girl, Tranquility? Away from the Rave, and Your Natural Friendship. The book received a positive review from onlinebookclub.org, which you can read here: https://forums.onlinebookclub.org/viewtopic.php?p=2833724

Out of the Bassline is not yet published as I am putting the finishing touches on the formatting, but I plan to publish it on Amazon around or shortly after the end of the year. In the meantime, I would love to get the word out so as many emo music and baseball fans as possible can enjoy the story, and I would love to have fun, entertaining conversations about these passions of mine for audiences to enjoy.

When it comes to my own music, I started out as an avid karaoke singer specializing in pop punk before beginning my guitar journey about a year ago. I now write and occasionally perform my own songs, inspired largely by pop punk/emo with some elements of hip-hop. Some of my songs are about the characters and stories of Out of the Bassline, so I plan to use these and more songs I will write to promote the book.
