About Ryan Matthew

Ryan Matthew is a public safety strategist, crisis intervention expert, and author who occupies a unique space at the intersection of lived experience, behavioral science, and frontline leadership. As a "layman’s sociologist," Ryan has dedicated his career to understanding human behavior under extreme stress, transforming complex behavioral theory into actionable workplace safety frameworks. His journey is defined by a powerful dichotomy: a decade spent serving as a Detective and Task Force Investigator in Minnesota (including the Golden Valley Police Department and Hennepin County Sheriff's Office), contrasted with a deeply personal battle against severe substance use disorder. Having survived the grueling reality of 22 treatment attempts, Ryan emerged with an unparalleled perspective on the crisis of addiction. Rather than letting his past define him, he leveraged this profound lived experience to revolutionize how organizations approach safety, de-escalation, and behavioral health. As a Master Instructor, Ryan has built a distinguished career in organizational development, serving as a National Director of Learning and Development and currently operating as a Principal Talent Development Specialist for a major metropolitan transit authority. He is the architect of proprietary training frameworks—including S.O.S. (Systems of Safety), S.S.S. (Safety, Service, Solution), and BREATHE—designed to equip frontline staff, healthcare workers, and safety professionals with an "Empathetic Command Presence." His methodology prioritizes verbal intervention, psychological safety, and emotional regulation over physical control, teaching teams how to navigate high-stress environments without compromising human dignity. Ryan is the author of the narrative non-fiction manuscript A Life Undefined, a raw and gripping work that blends the narrative tension of a policing memoir with the profound insights of a recovery journey. He lives in Fullerton, California, with his wife, Debora, and is dedicated to speaking, writing, and training teams to bridge the gap between sociology, addiction recovery, and operational safety.
