In May 1979, three months before my 19th birthday, I opened my first business: a closed-down restaurant I financed, renovated and reopened with $100 in operating capital. I learned more about profit that year than in any classroom. Since then I've turned two struggling restaurants back to profit within six months, grown a vending company from 17 accounts and $200,000 a year to more than 60 accounts and $800,000 in two years, and, since 1982, run Ross & Associates, my accounting and tax firm in Sierra Madre, California, which serves more than 300 clients. Keeping other people's books for four decades showed me something most owners never see from the inside: a busy business and a profitable business are not the same thing. Many of the owners I meet are working harder every year and paying themselves last. That's why I started coaching. Through Profit Mastery Blueprint, I help small business owners, accountants, consultants and freelancers price their work properly, find the costs that quietly eat their margin, and read the few numbers that actually matter each month. I'm the co-author of "Why Businesses Stop Growing and What You Can Do About It" and the author of "The 90 Day Profit Boost." On a podcast, I bring real numbers, plain-language steps listeners can use the same week, and stories from 45+ years of owning and fixing businesses.
