I learned the finer points of parenting by running a safe, orderly, and inviting classroom for nearly 20 years. From there, I became a middle school assistant principal, and that’s where I refined my skills and enlarged my territory.

Kids who get in trouble spend lots of time with their assistant principal. In my case, I learned so much about these kiddos, that they became “my students.” No one knew them better than me—not even their parents.

What I learned on-the-job was worth far more than anything I learned in a college setting. Kids need to feel a sense of belonging before they begin to soar. If they don’t fit in or have at least one caring adult in their lives to guide them, they’ll alway be lost.
