Lieutenant Julie Roland is an active duty full-time Navy Lieutenant and helicopter pilot who has deployed to the South China Sea and the Persian Gulf, is a recipient of both the Navy Commendation Medal and Achievement Medal, and was just selected to be promoted to Lieutenant Commander. On top of that, she does all the following in her FREE TIME:
Julie is a member of the San Diego Leadership Alliance, Rotary Club, Women’s Foundation, Truman National Security Project (where she is the San Diego Chapter Director), the Young Professionals Council of the San Diego LGBT Center, and serves on the Mission Bay Park Committee.
Julie just graduated the University of San Diego School of Law in only 2.5 years with a 4.0 GPA, receiving the CALI Excellence for the Future Awards in five classes, while serving active duty the whole time.
While in school, she was the President of the Public Interest Law Foundation and volunteered over 250 Pro Bono hours between the Legal Aid Society of San Diego and the Children’s Advocacy Institute, in addition to working for USD’s Housing Rights clinic. During her time at USD, she wrote two op-eds, one on youth engagement and the other on improving the blue economy in San Diego, both published by the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Julie also runs Just Tryna Make Friends, a nonprofit with a mission to promote the arts and build community. As a result of her efforts, Julie was just named a finalist in San Diego Business Journal’s Philanthropist of the Year. Relatedly, she delivered a TEDx Talk in August advocating for the value of investing in public art in San Diego.
Julie is committed to service in all that she does.
She is 31 years old and lives in Pacific Beach.
